Editorial 2006: ‘‘Give Jack his jacket’’

I remember the first edition in 1995 like it was yesterday. It’s impact caused ripples and created intense debate throughout the industry as it was the first publication of its kind to address the concerns of the construction industry and homeowner.

The Builder’s Guide is an initiative developed by Design Concepts to serve as an educational resource for the home owner, the general public and also to create awareness of the contribution made by the building community to the Grenadian economy. The Builder‘s Guide’s mission - is to assist the construction industry to achieve a competitive advantage in an information now world. We believe we have succeeded. Today, building contractors and supplies can efficiently provide information to help their customers make better building decisions with confidence. Our campaign has gathered strength over the years by offering valuable directives and ideas to the industry. For too long, we have been trapped in a struggle against ignorance, being penny-wise and pound-foolish when it comes to addressing our housing needs.

The passage of hurricane Ivan on September 7th 2004 was a monumental wake-up call to the urgent challenges the stakeholders face in the industry. Grenadians have the power to make their voices heard and to change the course for improvement in their housing policy centering on secure, safe constructed homes for all. This means ensuring that the industry is equipped with the best trained people working together. It also means ensuring that we have the right team with the right capabilities to perform the task that lies ahead.

Once the decision has been made, there are so many details to attend to that it’s difficult to ascertain where to begin. That’s where we can help. It is our job to link the serious consumer with dedicated qualified professionals within the home construction / improvement industry.
